The landscape here is so strange because its really a little bit of everything at once. We're incredibly close to the ocean but most of the time you would never know it. The first few nights I could hear it rumbling in the distance but now i don't think i notice it at all. This is the view towards the ocean from the top of a nearby hill. You can actually see the ocean a little here...its the brightest strip of reflection beyond the trees just left of center. this view reminds me of looking for the river on the drive towards clayton, NY (minus all the africa scenery ;)

In other places its all tropical forest. There are wild chimp populations right outside the sanctuary and the forests are absolutely beautiful once you are under the canopy.

but if you look the other direction, its endless fields and the only trees in sight are rigid rows of eucalyptus that are being dragged out of congo for paper as fast as they shoot up.

anyways, i guess i can never tell how to characterize this place. sometimes the fields are really savanna-like but other times you feel like its all lush forest. either way, its all beautiful.
